If there's a special hell for liars, LEIRA PETERSON (16) earns admittance everyday. It's the price of survival. Born of a Mehr mother and human father, she's erected a wall of deceit to hide the fact that beneath her silky black hair, creamy complexion and long runner's legs, she's a freak. Just add water. If her neck gets wet, gills form, wrenching her voice to operatic highs. When water hits her legs and feet, they transform into shimmery tail fins. She's spent years dodging rain showers and avoiding pools. That's the easy part. More excruciating is withholding the truth from ROWAN (17), the guy who's always been her best friend and is now much more.

Leira dreams of a normal life: college, career and love. The only way this can become a reality, however, is if she undergoes the same alteration her mother did to become human. But mother refuses to reveal where the Mehr live, warning that it's much too dangerous to undergo such a drastic procedure. And so life goes on in Yakima , Washington , the eighth driest city in the U.S.

Until a boating accident on prom night reveals her secret. Now there's only one way to prevent being turned into a lab specimen. That's what they do to freaks, right? She'll have to find the Mehr on her own, and convince them to make her a full-blooded human. But the alteration process is not as dangerous as the Mehr themselves.

Waveborn by CherylReifsnyder
50 parts Complete
Cass has no memories of her parents, only impossible dreams of waves and orcas and, sometimes, her mother's voice. When she and her adopted aunt return to the Pacific Northwest island--where her parents died twelve years before--Cass hopes the place will trigger long-buried memories. Instead, she discovers that the impossible is real, and that history is about to repeat itself. Unless she can stop it. ***Teaser*** The water hit with such a shock of cold that Cass thought she was going to pedal up and out of it again like some cartoon character. Instead, she flailed and splashed and smashed one arm against a piling as salt water poured into her raincoat & filled her shoes. "How do you like it?" Jason yelled. She spun until she could make out his form, black against gray sky. "What?" she sputtered. She dragged one arm from the water long enough to shove wet hair from her face. Jason became clearer: black hair dark above his yellow raincoat, arms crossed over his chest. "What the hell are you talking about?" "I asked how you like it, going for a swim in this water." She was open-mouthed with disbelief. It was a bad idea; a surge lifted her and slapped salt water into her mouth. Bile burned her throat as she coughed and all the while she was still flailing at the water, fighting the drag of shoes and clothes to keep afloat. She should kick them off-that's what you were supposed to do if you fell into the ocean with your clothes on-but she was only a dozen feet from the dock. Besides, it was her only coat. Jason watched her the way she'd watch a barracuda. "I know you're following me." "Following you?" What. The. Hell. She gave a mighty kick and tossed her coat onto the dock. Jason just stood there. "I nearly drowned last week, you know that? Now you show up as if nothing happened." "Last week," Cass said slowly, "I was in Argentina." Whatever he'd seen, it wasn't her.

** BARNES AND NOBLE TEEN SELECTION 2015 - TOP 7 YA's THAT WILL LEAVE YOU TERRIFIED OF THE OCEAN ** "Dawson's Creek meets Jaws and The Goonies in a twisted, supernatural tale unlike anything I've ever read. I am totally addicted!" - ARC reviewer SUMMARY: Eila Walker knows luck is not a friend, so she is downright shocked to inherit a million-dollar Cape Cod home. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself. When Raef O'Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow, Eila thinks life is pretty darn perfect - until she is hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow. Revealing coal-black eyes and iron-like strength as he rescues her, Raef can no longer hide what he is . . . or what she can do. Eila, last of her kind, can supposedly channel the power of human souls, while Raef is more adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn't such a myth, since Eila's grandmother was one kick-butt warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila's DNA. Determined to stay one step ahead of a dangerous clan that is hunting her, Raef, along with three unlikely allies, will do all they can to protect her. But as hidden pieces of their brutal histories unravel, Eila begins to understand just what went down in the harbor square. She soon realizes that following in her grandmother's fearless footsteps may be the only way to save those she loves . . . including Raef.
