62 years ago this week a light plane crashed into an Iowa cornfield killing Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson, and Richie Valens along with the pilot.  All three of the musicians were young men on the verge of stardom.  Their demise was memorialized in Don McLean's ballad "Bye Bye Miss American Pie. 
 I wrote a piece for our old writeon site several years back and this is a substantial revision and re-edit of that effort.  Jimt
