Imagine: The Battle of New York never happened. In fact, nothing after Loki's capture and imprisonment on the helicarrier actually happens. Loki never breaks out, Banner never hulks out, Barton attacks the ship but is unsuccessful, and (let's be honest, most importantly) Phil Coulson doesn't die. The Avenger's plan goes right. Loki is their prisoner. Okay, now you can read! Keep in mind that because the Battle of New York doesn't happen and (oops) I'm a huge sucker for Loki, this story really plays in his favor. It was clear that the events of New York had left Tony with severe PTSD and anxiety, but the events didn't effect Emma as much anymore because she had Pepper Potts to help her. But it seemed that no matter how much she helped him, Pepper wasn't able to get through to Tony. Not helping their problems, a new threat came to be; a powerful terrorist leader named the Mandarin has been responsible for multiple bombings. Tony fears that Pepper might leave him and take Emma with her because she's had enough, especially when she gets visited by an old interest, Killian. After Happy Hogan was severely injured by one of the bombings, an angry Tony gave a threatening promise to Mandarin on the news, which later caused a terrorist attack on Tony's own house, with Pepper and Emma inside. Everyone was left thinking Tony was dead, but he left Pepper and Emma a message, telling them he was alive.
