Set in the early twentieth century, in the fictional city of Saint Anthony (Minneapolis, Minnesota), this volume follows the adventures of the unlikely hero, Johnny Holiday. Abandoned as an infant on the steps of an orphanage and forced to find his own way in the world, Johnny comes of age during the Great Depression, working his way up through the newspaper businesses: from paperboy to the presses, to journalist. The novel begins when the hero is commissioned by a wealthy man to write a biographical essay on his missing son-in-law, and to investigate his disappearance while doing so. Soon Johnny finds himself caught up in a world of gamblers and gangsters, witchcraft and alchemy, police corruption and murder. He must keep his wits about him in order to stay alive.

Jack Bourbon used to be a cop. Now he's just a private investigator with a flask in one pocket, a smartass remark in the other, and a case file full of people who lie for a living. Magic City isn't normal. The mascot of the minor league baseball team turns up dead in his own costume. A husband's cheating scandal spirals into something darker. And a mysterious woman in red keeps showing up just when things get weird. Jack's not the kind of guy who believes in curses, demons, or destiny. He believes in whiskey, gut instinct, and ignoring restraining orders. But the deeper he and his partner Ruby dig, the stranger the case gets-and the more the city itself seems to push back. Ruby keeps her theories to herself. Jack keeps charging ahead. One of them understands what's really happening. Darkly funny, sharp as a broken bottle, and soaked in bourbon and bad decisions, Make It a Double Play on the Rocks is detective noir with a supernatural twist-and one hell of a curveball.
