Olivia LaRusso also known as Olivia Gunn (her mother's maiden name) had recently moved to California due to her dad losing his job and having to partner with his brother Daniel. But trying to make friends while having the LaRusso name only leads to people thinking you're this rich spoilt brat. So Olivia would use her mother's maiden name for as long as she could get away with.

Her uncle, Daniel LaRusso was very keen on teaching her karate from a very young age, this stayed with her while she moved away to England and she stuck with it, moving back to California though, meant she would be able to practice with him again.
