After a prolonged drought and in the clutches of a harsh winter, a small village in ancient Japan is faced with a hard decision: in order not to perish, they need to appease the local guardian spirit, the dragon watching over their land. They need to sacrifice a young maiden to become his bride. She will die, but they will live. For the commonwealth is mightier than a single life after all. 

The young Hagi is the unlucky one chosen for that task. 

After having received the honour of having been tossed over a cliff to her certain death in order to save her family, Hagi finds herself not dead, but in a world beyond her understanding. Surrounded by beings, who regard her merely as an odd curiosity, something lesser than them. 

The novel follows the human girl Hagi, the stubborn and grumpy dragon prince Kôryûmaru and the mischievous prince of the firebirds Ennetsujiko as they travel across the country, get caught up in the political squabbles of the courtiers and nobles and stumble upon an old secret, which had been guarded closely by the dragon empress Toyotama for centuries.
