The year is 1928, scientists engineer a vaccine for a strange n' mysterious disease, but this vaccine accidentally rewrites the human genome and woke the spirits that lay dormant deep within people around the globe activating powers people never knew they had, which they refer to as "magic". While this cure didn't do what these scientists intended, it did change the world as we know it, giving the people in the world Gifts. Our story follows Reilly a prodigy when it comes to magic, born into wealthy descendants of the scientists in the 21st century. She is set to inherit her fathers' fortune, but little does she know the dark secrets her family holds.

When twins Skylar and Jake were born, their scientist parents used them as an experiment. Each was injected with a dose of serum that would supposedly make them much stronger, smarter, simply better than other kids. But somebody added a chemical that changed the effects of the serum. As a result each twin got only half of the traits they were originally supposed to get. Skylar got the strength and speed while Jake got the brains. When they realized what had happened, the twins' parents immediately put them up for adoption, so neither one knew of the other. 12 years later Skylar is constantly failing all her classes, and Jake is getting bullied because he is so much weaker than other kids. But then Skylar's adoptive family decides to move across the country to find a new school for their daughter, which happens to be the school Jake goes to. They meet completely by accident. In the meantime, their parents have found a way to fix their mistake from 12 years ago -- they can make one of the twins perfect. But it requires for the other twin to give their life.
