Cece Barnes--aka romance writer Cecelia Worth--doesn't believe in love. Her stories make readers swoon across the world, but the fiercely private 25-year-old never tells them that her own stories feel like fanciful dreams to her. With a history full of unsuccessful relationships, unrequited feelings, and her parents now divorcing after almost 30 years of marriage, Cece's not sure that love is anything more than the stuff of storybooks.

Callum Gray is trying to write his first romance novel. He can see the characters in his head, feel the way they care so deeply for one another, but he can't seem to get it on the page. When his professor--Dr. Elise Burris--connects him with one of the foremost up-and-coming romance writers in the country, Callum jumps at the chance to get advice. Except Cecelia Worth is nothing like he imagined. Grumpy, cynical, and a little too happy with her red pen, he can't imagine how she writes some of the greatest love stories he'd ever read.

Dr. Elise Burris is trying to solve a cold case. After a successfully bringing attention to another unsolved Washington State murder. When she comes across the unsolved murder of 19-year-old heiress Amanda Murray on the old Madison Park ferry dock. She knows she has to write about it. If only Dr. Burris were a little less good at what she did.

When Dr. Burris goes missing, Cece and Callum must work together to find their beloved mentor. It becomes evident that to find Dr. Burris, they have to first solve Amanda Murray's almost 60-year-old murder case.

Alexandria Evergreen, a bored heiress to her dearest father's hotel empire with a penchant for justice on her own terms and too much time on her hands, lives a life of luxury and moral ambiguity. Behind her poised façade lies a dangerous secret: she quite enjoys seeing the life leave the eyes of abusive and perverted men - and the occasional woman - who believe themselves untouchable, operating in the shadows of high society. Clarke Griffin, a struggling law student in her final year, is barely holding her life together. Clarke has just landed an internship at a prestigious law firm, a position she fought hard for. Now all she wants is to graduate, pass the bar exam, and start building her career, following in the footsteps of her late father. From the moment Alexandria lays eyes on a stunning Clarke, she's obsessed. What could possibly go wrong when one is morally grey at best, entirely unhinged and a walking red flag at worst and the other embodies everything Alexandria isn't - pure, principled, and committed to the legal system? I'll be putting trigger warnings below, and I will add to the list as new potential triggers become relevant in the story. Always feel free to let me know if I have missed any. TW: Strong language, blood and gore, murder, sexual content, mature themes, violence, mentions of abuse (of all kinds), sexism, torture, mention of drugs, mention of suicide, absolute toxic, obsessive, and unhinged behavior.

What is it?" Garcia questions me in concern. I swallow harshly. "Emily texted me," I say, "It's a list of rules for tonight." "What do they say?" Garcia asks excitedly. I bite my lip as I read her text out loud. I take a breath, looking at Penelope. She shrugs at you through the mirror. "How are you doing?" She checks. I shake my head. What happens when a boy from a privileged, upper-middle-class family falls for a girl in a rehabilitation facility accused of murdering her best friend? In a world of mansions, expensive prep schools, and elite colleges, where money means favors and the right price will buy a ticket into or out of just about any situation, Trent Moreau is living easy. Drugs, parties, breaking and entering, traffic violations, property damage . . . it's nothing for Trent's father to swoop in and buy his son's way out of trouble. Only this time, he and his brother have gone too far. After ruining one of his father's executive gatherings, Crewe is sent to rehab, and Trent is forced to live on campus (and on a budget) under the watchful eye of a roommate who reports back to (and is likely getting paid by) Trent's father. When he's caught tampering with files at Crewe's facility, Trent is assigned (more) community service hours to be fulfilled by spending time with seventeen-year-old Summer Evans, resident psychopath. The previous year, Summer's best friend was found dead in her backyard swimming pool. Summer, the only known witness, remembers nothing about that night. Because foul play was suspected and she was a minor, Summer and her family agreed to rehab in lieu of a prison sentence. But the more time Trent spends with Summer, and the more he learns about the events surrounding her friend's mysterious death, the less sense it all makes. What if Summer isn't guilty at all? What if she's innocent, and he can prove it? As Trent quietly falls for the extraordinary artist, his investigation is going to take a dramatic turn, sending him spiraling deeper into the egotism and entitlement edging his own privileged lifestyle.
