A prequel to the screenplay, "The Blue Herring", written by myself in 2018. However, this short story can also stand on its own. (I recommend reading the screenplay first.) ---------------------------------------------------- 18 y/o Lionel Enright, having recently graduated as Valedictorian of his high school class, is self-considered a misfit of sorts. However, he has never been let down by his incredible intellect. Others know this as well--including the members of his town's skillfully concealed criminal alliance, Decadent. Being a young, clever lad whose name is scarcely known in his hometown of New Haven, Connecticut, he is the perfect contender for induction. In other words, their ideal new recruit. For all of his life, Lionel has never been a trouble-maker; not once a delinquent, a hot-head, or a player of any kind. It has also been known that after a while, those members who were hesitant will no longer want to leave. How JB made his money.
This is the story of Jeremy Bentham. He is a young man who through loyalty, was propelled into a life of drug dealing and murder, never meant for him. Upon his exit from prison, for being loyal and doing unspeakable things, he got busy building up his own family empire. JB, as his family calls him. Was taught the art of killing by his Italian (assassin) mentor in prison- Mr. X. Jeremy developed a keen and acute talent for murder over the time that he served. Through contract killings and drug distribution the B-Mob (as they are called by its members) has grown quite strong. JB and the family consist of two individual families joined together, doing business with JB at the head. Besides being killers for hire for the Italians, they receive truck loads of cocaine from a blood thirsty Mexican cartel. Unbeknownst to him and to the family, there are enemies all around. Most people getting money know, that it's always the closest people to you that commit the worst offenses. JB is confronted head on by treachery but never dreams that it goes as deep as it does. We are truly dealing with a criminal master mind in Mr. Bentham. But it will take all of his brain resources to survive what's in store. This is the story of JB and how he made his money.Complete

I grabbed my glass, sliding hers to her and taking a long drink as she hesitantly reached out to take her glass. I watched her staring at the brown liquid in the glass, looking to be debating. "It will help with the pain you're in," I decided to say, making her look up at me. There was something in the depths of her eyes, something that nearly made me shiver. Then she looked back at the glass, tilting it to her lips and downing the entire contents. I was surprised, seeing her clench her eyes shut, her lips in a firm line. "Why did you have them brand me?" she finally asked, setting her glass back on the table before meeting my gaze.
