the story of Iris Evergreen, an outgoing 18-year-old living with her very upper-class family. She hates the life her parents have given her, as the options that are given to her are to marry a rich man and bare children like most women were told to do in the 1900s. She isn't like most girls and so settling down so young would be barbaric and horrendous, she wants to live her life and have adventures of her own. So, when the war breaks out in 1912 her bold decision is to sign up and fight with everyone as that would be an extraordinary adventure but being a women, she couldn't just walk into the registers office and sign up. Iris takes it into her own hands and changes her own appearance she's now known as Jasper Rose and being sent to France to fight for Britain, along the way she makes friends and endures some frightful interactions with fellow soldiers. Iris is constantly put to the test with a loss of a friend she had made and a friend suffering with chronic depression after losing that said friend. There is some romance between Iris and a fellow soldier however, she has not yet told her of her secret and when she does Things become incredibly awkward between them. Later, Iris is Sent back to the front lines of Belgium while she is there she is met with her Father. She makes it over to the German trench but was unprepared for what the Germans would do, half the men are shot, and the rest are captured. Iris is sent to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp where she is starved, abused and constantly tested. However, Austrian people on the outside would smuggle out children and women and the sick, Iris was smuggled out on the 13th of March 1918. She goes looking for the Soldier she had a brief fling with but has a hard time finding him
