Aizawa had his leg amputated after a disastrous attack by The League of Villains years back, leaving him with no choice but retire from any kind of hero and teacher job. Although it wasn't the leg that made him decide to quit his job, it was the sudden lost of his quirk. Following that, he lost his already limited smile, drive and everything else. He locked himself from the world following the death of Midoriya in the same battlefield.

Shouta Aizawa takes notice to how his best friend, Hizashi Yamada, seems to be struggling with his past recently. Shortly after he finds out and attempts to grow closer to him like they had been in the past, Hizashi mysteriously disappears without a trace. His uncoordinated legs fell out from under him and he crashed back to the ground. Shouta put a hand to his shoulder in an attempt to calm him down, but he clawed desperately and flipped over, thrashing around to get Shouta off of him. Shouta held on.
