Eugene Donner is a sixteen year old Human, a minority race in the massive empire of the King's Domain. On a trip to the capital of the kingdom to visit his dying grandmother, Eugene is noticed by a military official and finds himself dragged to the palace. Because of a genetic mutation, Eugene is the only Human with an energy core--an organ that gives every other race the ability to wield energy, a phenomenon of magic--and the monarchy of the King's Domain send Eugene out on a mission. Grow stronger, and he will become the greatest weapon for them to use in their civil war. The only problem is, the Resistance--a militia group fighting the King's Domain within the empire--is after Eugene and want him dead. Eugene finds himself falling into a political mess he doesn't understand, and finds his life in danger every day for the orders of a king.

Rose has a secret and no one knows what it it, but no one really cares, but her secret follows her around, literally. Rose lives in a world where there are only kids (Well under 20) and right before there 20th birthday they get taken away, no one knows what happens to them but the all suspect that there dead. Rose is 19, meaning she doesn't have long before it her turn. Everyone gets their blood drawn daily, but no one knows why. The only a adults are the Helpers (the doctors) as Rose likes to call them and Them but Rose doesn't ever know if they're human. When she gets assigned to a doctor she starts asking questions; questions that will hurt the people she cares about.
