Set in the period of Twilight:New Moon, when Jacob goes into Bella's room to insist that she remember the stories about his wolfy nature, she suggests they run away. This diverges from canon there, because Jacob accepts and they both set up going on a roadtrip, with Charlie and Sam's (reluctant) consent.
Meanwhile Alice sees Bella disappear off the radar, or maybe glimpses where she's in a truck driving itself with no real direction and gets worried, however instead of alerting her already temperamental brother Edward, she sends her emotionally manipulative boyfriend to talk to him, while she goes to Forks to talk to Charlie about it.

I stared down at the letter in my hand. There was something so familiar about it. Yet it was different. Mysterious. Alluring. Almost Irresistible. *** After Edward leaves Bella in the woods, she is heartbroken. She is in a constant state of intense depression. That is until a letter arrived in the mail.
