I take a step closer and he tenses. Hesitation blooms inside of me but I move before I can think it over again. I stand on my tip-toes, one hand reaching up to his jaw. I hear him swallow.

"Thank you," I whisper, planting a kiss on his cheek, and I hear his breath hitch. I pull away to find his eyes closed but they fly open when I step back. His fingers wrap around my wrist and he tugs me back to him.

"Don't do that," he breathes. "Don't touch me and expect me to pretend like nothing happened, like you did. I won't do it -- I can't." ❞
