Kathryn is an Avox. She had another name once, but it has faded away over the years. She's been an Avox for as long as she can remember. Her parents committed a crime against the Capitol, but they died before they could be punished properly. So the Capitol took it out on Kathryn.

When Kathryn is set as the servant to Lyle Coates, one of the tributes for the 112th Hunger Games, she falls in love with him. However, she knows that Avoxes are never allowed to talk to the tributes, so she keeps her attraction inside. She can't even talk to him. And why would one of the tributes even pay attention to an Avox like her?
