Jace left his sister behind to join Valentine. Jocelyn is awake. Both Val and Clary are working on their relationship and Clary has stopped pushing her to talk to Jocelyn. Alec and Val are together as are Magnus and Lucy. But all of them can feel the missing piece that is Jace. Valkyrie is trying to find her brother and bring him home at all costs. Lucy is worried about both her parabatai and her brother neither of who have been the same since Jace left.
Will Jocelyn answer Val's questions? Will Jace learn who his parents really are? Will Valentine reveal the truth about Valkyrie's twin? And what about the mysterious Shadowhunter who goes by the name of Sebastian Verlac? And what happens to Val's relationship with Clary after Aldertree releases the dead or alive order on Jace?

Ben Lightwood, twin brother of Alec Lightwood, has been missing for over a month. When Jace finally finds him in the clutches of Valentine's men, chained, tortured and beaten half to death, he can't believe what he sees. He tries to help, but there isn't that much he can do. When Clary finally rescues Jace and Ben, she portals all three of them to Magnus' apartment as she knows he is the only one who can help. Both Alec and Magnus are shocked to see them, especially Ben. Ben's injuries are too severe for him to be at the Institute, they needed a warlock's magic. Jonathan Morgensterns' Twin, Rafe Lightwood.
Rafe Oskar Lightwood neè Morgenstern is the slightly younger, mostly identical twin brother of Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern. Due to how little demon blood he actually has in his system, unlike his twin brother, Rafe was raised alongside Jace Herondale at the Wayland Estate. The demon blood has given Rafe one particular gift though. He can sense blood connections between people. Because of this, both he and Jace know that Jace isn't really Valentines' son, but that doesn't make their bond any less strong. Rafe and Jonathan share a small Mark, which has been on their forearms since birth. This Mark enables them to know how close they are to each other, as well as feel each others' emotions. The closer the twins are to each other, the darker the Mark gets. But this comes with drawbacks. Because of Jonathan being in the Seelie Realm, whenever Rafe gets too worked up and angry, Jonathan feels it and gets angry as well. This results in them both coughing blood until they can calm themselves down. And if one twin dies, the Mark will fade to a silvery scar, but never fully heal beyond that. Due to Ragnor Fell often helping Jocelyn and Clary hide when they are being tracked, and having helped him during his first nasty coughing fit that nearly killed him and Jonathan, Rafe is quite close to Ragnor. Jace has been a part of the NY police department for about a year now and even though his own sister was the victim this time, he can't choose family before his job. He swore an ode when he first got his badge and that is something he won't give up on that easy, not even for Alec. 5 years in prison may seem like an eternity and that is exactly what Alec expects it to be, but what he didn't expect was to meet Magnus Bane. He's 23 years old and arrested for murdering his very own stepfather, but the reason isn't what everyone thinks it is. It's much worse. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, Magnus doesn't quiet know what's real or not, but one thing he knows for sure is that ever since Alec Lightwood arrived at the prison, the voices in his head has begun to disappear.
