Farah, a slave, who has lived in the slums of Merciana her entire life. The Queen buys Farah, one of the best and most behaved slaves, for Avalon, who knows nothing about life at court. Avalon, a lowborn noble, agrees to move to Merciana at the Queen's behest. She is offered a spot to partake in Trenka, an event that happens every ten years, to see if she, or any of the other recruits, are worthy enough to become a Protector. Can she overcome her fears and doubts and participate in Trenka, or will she succumb to her anxiety and retreat to her village?
