The Japanese phrase 'Mono no aware' (or in short: 'Aware') is literally translated as: "the pathos of things". It's the awareness of impermanence or the transience of things, and both a transient gentle sadness at their passing as well as a longer, deeper sadness about this state being the reality of life.
