As a new school year begins, the town is reeling from the tragic death of high school golden boy, Seth Lark, Nicholas is trying to be a normal American teen, but the summer's events made him realize that his life is more complicated than he realized. With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Nicholas must look for a a way to fulfill his father's wishes while staying true to himself. Weighing heavily on his mind is also his fractured childhood friendship with Arsen Payne.

Meanwhile, cheerleader Blair Wallis is anxious to see her crush after being away all summer and dealing with her sister's troubles, but she's not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Blair's nerves, which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Mary, aren't the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Dara Wake, arrives in town from Key West to stay with her grandmother, Faye, there's an undeniable spark between her and the boy Blair has her eyes on.
