The Civil War caused all of what was formerly known as the United States of America to break up. The country divided into four main territories: North, South, Northwest and Southwest. All of the territories agreed to never allow their residents to leave their territory (non-negotiable) and to never trade with each other unless it's dire: like food and water.
So if someone needs a battery for a windmill machine and you're not in the territory that makes it, no more windmill machines. If you were in the Southern Territory and needed a tire that only the Northern territory manufactured, you end up like me: sneaking into the Northern territory to get it. Fuck.
