In the kingdom with no name, magic is forgotten. Before the late king was assassinated, he made it his goal to eradicate the plague of magic from his lands. The king was a human in a land of magical beasts, and he felt that the only way to cement his power and control over them was to take away the one thing he felt made them special. Magic. You see in this land, almost every person was not a human, but a being with magical power. These beings, though often nearly identical to a normal human, possessed a connection to the world that gave them abilities far beyond the reaches of the average man. Beasts of fire, creatures of the deep, beings of the sky, all with power far beyond that of the lowly king.

And so, with the aid of powerful magic texts long since forgotten by the world, the king used magic to destroy magic. The creatures that called this land home had their power stripped from them. They became the same as any other human, both in mind and body. The king had his wish, a kingdom under his thumb, where the threat of magic had been wiped from the minds of his citizens. Absolute control. Or so he thought. This is the story of the survivors, the ones who, with just a spark, coaxed the dying embers of magic into a fire.
