When you turn seventeen your "soulmate phone" is activated. You create a screen name and then you and your soulmate can text each other, but you can't reveal your real name. Clarke doesn't think the whole "soulmate" thing would work. She lives in Polis, California. So when she turns seventeen, she gets her "soulmate phone". Meanwhile, in Arkadia, Washington, Bellamy has also turned seventeen and receives his "soulmate phone".
