Matthew O'rien's family has been poor since the beginning of time. When his father, William, gets offered work on the transcontinental railroad, he jumps at the chance to end the cycle of poverty. But an unfortunate work accident leaves his wife Anne a widow. At 14, Matthew finishes his father's job and pays off his debts. He learns that his mother has grown ill, and he rushes home. She soon passes, and with nothing left but the money he earned and the land the railroad gave him to settle, he boards the train west with his best friend James. All seems well for the duo. They get a new start to life at the ripe young age of 16. A close friend even manages to get the two boys 1st class tickets. But little did they know who else would be riding the train. The Cooper siblings were raised with silver spoons in their mouths. They were about as far away from Mattew and James as you can get. They're wealthy and known for their looks, and the middle child, Charlotte, has more eligible bachelors chasing her than she can count. But, like the rest of her siblings, longs for an adventure like in the books she's read. And when Matthew catches her eye, an unlikely friendship (and romance) blossoms.
