Lori has a well-known secret that everyone in her small Southern town knows: she's crazy. Loony toons, been in an asylum, talks-to-angels crazy. But she has another secret that's not so well-known: she's nephilim.
Or so she believed until her parents died. Now she's a normal college student working part-time at her family's grocery store and her craziest problem is nursing a broken heart. Until the day a demon steps into her checkout line and throws her life - and sanity - into chaos.
Enter her savior: the blue-eyed angel Xavier who looked after Lori when she was a little girl. He's on a crusade to close a gate to Hell, but Lori's unbridled nephilim powers threaten all the endeavors of Heaven on earth. His new objective becomes clear: he must guide her down the path of control, but how can he when Lori thinks he's a figment of her imagination?
Will Xavier's hardest battle be teaching his nephilim to control her powers, or resisting the temptation to be more than her guardian angel?

Demons kill and destroy aimlessly, their origins inexplicable and unknown. Stranger beings wander the ruins of what's left of the world. Humans need not eat or sleep, caught in a state between life and death. They cannot die or be born naturally, but they can be killed and they can be made. The few that survived with their sanity somewhat intact have locked themselves into warded cities, but their protections are feeble and often ineffective. The Order that united them is long gone, broken into factions known only by the sins for which they have fallen. The Houses that protected them are crumbling, falling into ruin as their members were culled down by angels and demons, as well as their own mad quest to save the world; the Pilgrimage, a vain attempt to steal into Eden and murder God himself.
