Even though the demon king was killed by the pillars and team Kamaboko about 800 years ago. The demons did not disappear instead they were freed from there instincts and regained control of there bodies and minds. Since then the demons have divided into two factions the demons who followed the demon slayers and became their most trusted compnions. And the other part became the worshipers of Muzan, The Demon King.
