After a mission that didn't go as well, both Tony and Rhodey were injured and in critical condition, unable to fully recover. However, Tony had made a solution that would have helped them quickly recover and be back to their healthy selves. So they would need to get hold of the solution somehow, even if that meant traveling to a time when he had just made it. But no one other than Tony knew how to use the machine and they messed up a little. But they'll make it work.
