Jack Twist is part of the popular group at school: the football team. They run the biggest game in the school: making fun of the nerds, the shut-ins, and anyone who's not in their "cool group." And even though Jack's not in the team, his smarts and charm help him fit in. Especially since his childhood best friend, Adam, is part of the team. The two are inseparable and get into the most trouble.
And the biggest trouble is just around the corner when Adam proposes a new game for Jack: pretend to become friends with someone unpopular and then humiliate them in front of the whole school. The stakes are raised even higher when the game turns into a bet. Adam bets that Jack can't get a certain shut-in to believe Jack's his friend.

Things start to change when another ranch hand is hired: Ennis Del Mar. His circumstances are quite different. Ennis is dropped off at the ranch by his father in the hopes that the job could "straighten him out." Ennis had recently come out as gay to his girlfriend, who had then spilled the beans to his dad.
