Henrik Mikaelson believed he was stuck. 

He saw how everyday had the same routine. You get up, fail a magic class, punch a vampire in the face, talk with your equally sad sister, eat, repeat.

After his parents deaths, they both just shut down. Hope barely left her room, it was a miracle she still spoke to him at least. Then things got better, but not for him. He needed to get out. He needed to be around people that didn't know him. People that didn't know his family.
