Every year in the Kaisen village there is a lottery. Only ages 10-20 are allowed to participate, well, are forced to participate. They are rounded up from their homes and forced to sign their name on a sliver of paper. The names are thrown into a box and prayer begins. Townspeople circle the box and pray over it in hopes that the name pulled serves the king well. Whatever souls name that is dragged from that wooden box would be forced to devote their life to being a servant to King Toji.

Kings before him would have this lottery only once, and keep the same servant for their entire reign of power. But everyone knows the Sire's temper is far too hot. He kills each servant he gets in under 12 months. Once upon a time winning this lottery was a gift from god. Leaving your dirty poor village to indulge in the palace life was a beautiful thing, but now it was suicide to step foot in the palace doors.
