Arline Varas was stripped from the possibility of a normal childhood when she was three-years-old, and the stuffed bear she had been playing with suddenly walked out of her hands and continued the dance she had been doing with it earlier. It was a curse, but her parents saw the curse as an opportunity. They used her for their own personal gain by utilizing her abilities in a way that helped them rob banks and casinos. At that point, she went from saying the power was a curse, to claiming that she was a curse.
Three years later, her aunt confronted and formed an arrest on her brother and his wife, giving Arline another chance at some semblance of a normal life. And for eight more years, that was what she got, until she turned eighteen and graduated high school, where she was then pressured to join S.H.I.E.L.D, and just like with her parents, Arline felt like she didn't have any other option. She was once again just a tool for someone else's personal gain.
