Fate is a funny thing. It likes to break things that shouldn't be broken. Which is sad. But it has absolutely no business or whatsoever with this story, because here we have: an emotionally unstable teenager who's always on crack, and a grossly old vampire who's having an existential crisis. Stir it all up, add some tension and chemistry and start reading.
