Set in the fictional 1300's, South India, speculative quasi-historical fiction. Think Discworld meets the Deccan. Alternative History. 1300's. Deccan Plateau. Timeline : 1336 - Harihara I (Hakka) unites the five rajyas and founds the Vijayanagara empire; during his reign he creates a civic system of military local governers or Nayakas, and organises lands into a 6-tiered heirarchical system (Rajya, Vente, Nadu, Sima, Gramam, Sthala). To protect borders, he fortifies Badami, Gooty, and Udayagiri. 1342, Harihara II is born. 1356 Harihara I dies, Bukka is made king. 1377 Bukka dies, and Harihara II takes the throne at 35 years of age, and reigns until 1404 when he dies at the respectable old age of 62. Landscape : rocky hills, peaks and valleys, dry scrub, except bordering the river where the valley is narrow and deep and green. Economy : Agriculture; taxes from land, grazing, marriage, custom duties, road tolls, plantation revenue, manufacturers, potters, craftsmen, washermen, shoemakers, barbers.
