Maddox Chadwyke had given up on everything.  Fourteen years ago, he led his people to victory against the Council of Humanity.  In return for his heroism, the newly formed Confederation of Human Peoples bestowed the title “Scourge of Humanity” upon him and sent him into exile.  Betrayed and still reeling from the atrocities of war Maddox disappeared without a trace until he was discovered by Ethan Whitaker.

The teenager begs Maddox to teach him the art of Soule Manipulation, the method by which Ascendeds use internal energy to perform miraculous feats of body and mind. The only complication: Ethan is a Sape, someone who might not have a Soule at all.

Ethan’s appearance forces Maddox to confront his past and he is initially reluctant to teach the boy, but Ethan’s tenacity eventually wins Maddox over and he agrees to take Ethan under his wing. Amidst deception, being constantly hunted and discovering immeasurable power within himself, holding on to his humanity seems harder and harder for his already shaky sense of morals, making him lose bits of himself in the process. The remaining people have grouped together in packs and gangs, raiding the desolate cities and avoiding the ones called the Destroyers, who capture and torture the remaining survivors. No one is safe. One fifteen year old boy knows this better than anyone. He and his older sister lived together, sticking to the dark alleys of their abandoned city, and survived for years after the apocalypse, until the Destroyers came and took her away, reigning terror on the few who remained in the city. The boy, desperate to find someone to help him save his sister, leaves the city and finds one of the youngest cooperative packs in North America, called the Raiders, comprised of unwanted individuals with the strange powers left from the destruction of years past. Their leader, a destructive insomniac, promises to help him in return for the skills and usefulness this young boy seems to possess, but something disrupting sends waves of unease through the Raiders, something about a forgotten past and talk of a mutiny. Evelyn Sheer and the researchers are trying to create a genetic modification that enables humans to photosynthesize. Once in the facility, Evita is tagged as a test subject and loses all say over what happens to her body. She has to escape. By the time she comes up with a plan there is only one problem. Evita isn't ready to leave.

Six high school students looks like anyone else acts like anyone else but are capable of things no one else is. They learnt from a young age no one that means NO ONE can know about their powers even their parents and other siblings. It brings out the true friends and those who just want to use you. In the end, what do you do when your closest friend betrays you? This is the story as they try to keep their biggest darkest secret of what they are capable of and as they discover they're not the only ones like them... I am not very good at trigger warnings before individual chapters but there is mention of blood, cold abuse and parents divorcing. (But read at your own risk in case I mention something else. I am working on rewriting this story and when I do there will be the trigger warnings in the correct places.) (small teaser.) No one sees me. I am a ghost. I brush against the wooden fence.
