In this AU the fam has wings. The wings usually manifest/grow when they turn 12 but can develop later or earlier than that. The process isn't painful but can be depending on the size or their wings. Usually there 2 metres long when they first manifest but as the person grows older they can grow to 4-5 metres. The wings can become damaged when tucked away for too long.
