Lady Emma grew up on Asgard. She even helped Loki out a few times, like that unfortunate incident with Idun. However, Emma found Asgardians to be high-handed and arrogant. She much preferred to live among the humans, so she did. Through time, Emma would appear to live among them, and then return home to Asgard when her presence became too obvious. When World War II began, Emma vowed to return, and there, she met someone who would touch her heart for decades to come.
