The Way We Became Us

We have been best friends ever since kindergarten. Our moms were friends, so at first, it was a forced friendship. Then we started to hang out more and more. We sat together at lunch, we were partners in gym, and we always hung out after school and on the weekend. Sometime during fifth grade, things started to change. We were in the same class, so I expected everything to stay the same. But he became "cool" and I became "popular". He was a boy and I was a girl, so it would look weird if we hung out together. I mean, we still talked, but we went our own ways. I liked a guy named Theo, and I think he liked a girl named Abby. Let's just say, everything changed.
