But she had only managed to write down that single word, when suddenly the lantern beside them extinguished itself.

"What the -"

All around them, lanterns extinguished themselves, which, in such a remote section of the library, meant that they were nearly swallowed by the newfound darkness.

"That's strange," remarked the girl, frowning as she relit the lantern nearest to them. "They never extinguish themselves, not unless Madam Pince puts them out..."

The hair on the back of Hermione's neck stood on end. Something was not right here. It was too cold, too dark, too sudden.

"We need to get out of here," she said hoarsely. "Right now."

"It's just the lights -"

"Right. Now." She could've sworn she heard the distant sound of slithering - but surely it was just her mind playing tricks on her.
