Entry for the EyesLipsFierce contest.
As a young widow, my grandmother was too busy solving problems to feel sorry for herself. Back in 1974, for two wonderful months, I spent my afternoons with her. She took me along while she drove all over town, gathering the tools and knowledge necessary to tackle life's challenges. She learned to repair toilets, replace window screens and service her car without the internet, without a husband, and without many resources. She was the model of self-reliance in a time when women still needed their husband's permission to have their own credit card or serve on a jury. She taught me to bring my best self, something I try every day to do.
