Zara is a novel that depicts an intimate kmowledge of coming of an age, love among teenagers and family life. After Zara the protagonist who is from a very poor background has an encounter with Afrah, her life automatically takes a new turn. Her hopelessness is turned into hope, her poverty is becoming a thing of the past and Zara is beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel until Muhammad, Afrah's boyfriend, returns from abroad. His presence triggers a period of restlessness in Zara's life, as she believes that the young man is shifting his affection from Afrah to her. Afrah will have none of it and believes that the only way to confront a world that has taken away her mother from her, given her father to another woman and delivered her boyfriend to a girl she picked from the slums is to commit suicide; an unexpected turn of event opens up a whole new life that hands Afrah and Zara all thet think they've lost, making their fantasies their realities.

In a typical African setting a girl must be married at a certain age. It's almost like her life is programmed "what to do, when to do,how to do and with whom". In the Northern part of Nigeria people see an unmarried girl of 25years and above as a failure to her religion,culture,family,society and herself. The so called society forgets the struggles of the "unmarried girl" what she goes through emotionally, what she thinks, things she has to do to keep a relationship just to be married, decisions they make to make people around them happy, but the truth is every single girl has a story good or bad and all she needs is someone not to judge but to have a little empathy and know that she didn't plan her life. This book however is a fictional but relatable story, the story is about four young girls who have been more of sisters than friends for so many years, in good times and bad times. Their friendship was what they have for each other but like many friendships it was tested. Was it that their love wasn't love after all or was their bond not strong enough? In the end these girls made decisions that broke the ties, what they built and the future of their sisterhood.
