Captain Thomas Haywood, heir apparent to the Earldom of Dorchester, has returned from the American War of Independence to find his parents dying, his estate in ruins, and the terrible news that his younger brother Francis has taken his own life. Things are bleak and lean in the years following Tom's return, and it seems they will only get worse.

That is, until a stranger turns up on his doorstep one rainy, windswept evening. The girl, Emmeline, is injured and traumatised, covered with burns and lacerations, refusing to say more than a word about their cause. Tom gives her shelter without questioning, until events no longer permit them to live together without the civil union of marriage. And so begins their tale.

Tom soon discovers Emmeline is the victim of a larger scheme: harvesting Essence, the mysterious and often misunderstood force that makes their kind, the Elementals, who they are. Facing opposition in tracking down the perpetrators and obstacles in creating what is later to become the Order of Advanced Elementals, Tom, Emmeline, and the Elementals of London will face a threat beyond their imagining, one only found in their nightmares.
