The story takes place in the 1910s. The story is quite divided, but first and foremost it is about a mansion outside New York. We also get to know about an orphanage. This orphanage is located in New York. At this orphanage it is not good. The managers at the orphanage are very strict. And they beat the orphans if they do not do as they are asked. We also get to know a number of people. It's mostly about a boy. Named Jeffery and about his life. And about another boy named Lester. In the end, the story ends. Only here do we see that all the people have something in common. The story is also partly about love and infatuation, but also about sad things. This is death, violence and grief.

Adele has her work cut out for her. The woman running the First Street Orphanage before her, left abruptly and the accounting records are a complete mess. She's pretty sure the woman was embezzling money that was supposed to keep the place running, but she's going to have to delve deeper into the books to find out how she did it. And if that wasn't going to keep her busy enough, a strange man with a strange connection to the orphanage has shown up on her doorstep and won't go away. She's made it her mission to repair the damage that's been done, but is suspicious of this strange man. She finds it hard to trust him when his knowledge of what happened makes her suspect he may have been involved.
