Everest Pierce goes to a school that either ignores them or stares at them weirdly, why you may ask? 

Well, that is because they're the only person at their school that is a person of color, the only black person to be exact. They treat her as if she is a disease like they've never seen a person of color before. 
But Everest doesn't care, all they're trying to do is get through the day.
