Rift, otherwise known as Alex, is a young adult of no certain age working and living in a café that they don't remember owning. In fact, they don't remember much of anything and no amount of thinking brings back even the smallest memory. How old are they? Why are they there? Where did they come from? Why is there an inter-dimensional hole in the ceiling? Why is a knight falling out of it? Why does any of this matter?

RIFT is a story about life and identity, taking place in a café bombarded and surrounded by surreal occurrences, characters, joys, and misgivings. It all starts with a hole.All Rights Reserved

[Watty Awards 2019 Winner - New Adult!] Damian Ryker is something of a nomad. In his 22 years of life he's moved a grand total of 14 times. But he's here to stay this time, honest. He's already got himself a cushy new job in town and he's exploring the popular local shops, like that coffee shop down the road. It seems nice enough, perhaps a little too hipster for his taste and the barista is awkward, if not the slightest bit weird. But there's something strange about the innocuous café, like-oh I don't know-earthquakes that seem to destroy it every morning before miraculously repairing themselves and leaving him with the only memory of it. And just when that sounded a tad off, things start to get...a little out of this world. ------------ This was my 2017 Nanowrimo story that I couldn't quite fall out of love with. Inspired by the fun and fascinating world of fan fiction AUs, I hope you'll have as much fun with this as I had writing it!

Opening Scene: Alex awoke with a start. The familiar hum of his apartment was replaced by the cacophony of a bustling marketplace. He blinked rapidly, trying to dispel the vivid dream, but the vibrant colors and unfamiliar faces remained. Panic surged through him. "Where am I?" he muttered, his voice barely audible over the din. He touched his chest, feeling his heart pound. The smell of spices and the chatter of merchants were too real, too immersive. An NPC approached, a young man with a warm smile. "Creator, you've returned!" he exclaimed. Alex's confusion deepened. "What do you mean? This can't be real..." The NPC's expression softened. "It is real, Alex. You're in the world you created." Tears welled in Alex's eyes. The magnitude of the situation hit him like a tidal wave. He was trapped in his own creation, a world both familiar and terrifyingly foreign.

Being constantly compared to ones brother can make one feel neglected. This is the case for Kai Walker. His brother was the star of the schools soccer team as well as the star of the basketball team. But one sentence from her has sent Kai over the edge. The phrase he never thought he would hear from her. Yet it happened. Without hope he gives up, right after the sentence he decides to end his existence. He jumps from the school's roof ignoring the shouts from Amy. Yet it still didn't work. He wakes to found himself in a land unknown to him. A land full of magic, knights, and hero's. Unknowing that his current body is in hospital in a coma.
