He has good grades because Atua forbid his parents find out he brought home anything less than an A, not that they'd be home much to see it. This is shown in his outward appearance, including slightly messy hair, usually a bandaid or two somewhere on his body to cover up a bruise or a gash made by unfriendly hands, and the traditional 2nd year school uniform as opposed to the 3rd, like Shuichi.
