A short story about a young black girl, wanting to know why. "Why mama?" I ask trying to keep my eyes dry "Because we are different, baby. YOU are different" My mama said looking at me with love and concern "Pop's always told me our difference was a good thing" I say with sorrow shining in my eyes. "And look where that got him" My eyes never stay dry for long

Mama told me that I was a beautiful girl when I was little. Mama said that I had the prettiest tan skin, soft wavy black hair, and the most enchanting emerald eyes. She always called me her bundle of joy. Then she got very sad when she told me that I didn't have a voice. I was only two at the time. I didn't understand any of the former English gibberish. Mama looked like she wanted to cry every time I opened my mouth to let out what was supposed to be a small giggle of joy. Or when I wanted to say her name and Papa's name. But no sound would ever come out, and I was a very confused little toddler until the very first day of kindergarten. © Copyright 2016 Yuan S.C. HIGHEST RANKING #221 in Short Story 3/17/19.
