Anemone Hottswell had a pretty decent upbringing. Her father was a merchant, and the Hottswells were part of the minuscule middle class of the Tudor era. Her mother was a nurse and seemed to be able to cure anything from a common cold to syphilis in only a matter of minutes. Anemone loved her parents very much and knew she was a lucky girl.

A week before midsummer, however, Anemone discovers a secret her mother never wanted her to discover and seeks out the Coven of the Elements, the most feared witches throughout all of Britain. As Anemone learns more and more of her mother's secrets and hunts for the truth behind the Coven, she begins to comprehend why her mother did what she did, and why she took what she took.
