Isabella short Bella is the twin sister of Elisabeth Harmon. After the death of their mother they are brought into an orphanage, but after a while the orphanage is full and there is no longer place for both of them. No one of the two twins want to leave their other half and they also both enjoyed to play chess in the cellar with Mr Shaibel. 
But one of them has to leave.
Finally it's Bella that has to leave and she was brought into another orphanage. 
From then on the Harmon twins never saw eachother again. 

Bella is in the other orphanage all on her own. Nobody she knows by her side. Without her twin sister Beth.
But still with the same love for chess.
She tries to teach herself the complex game by playing with herself or other children and reading all kinds of chess books and magazines.

After Bella got out of the orphanage she starts a completely new life, leaving her dark and hard past behind. 
Trying to find out who she is.
