A jRPG is usually focused around a pre-established or pre-written development of a character or a set of characters, whereas typical RPGs, though sometimes having these aspects as well, tend to have a greater focus on the character creation and the expression of that character's development in the form of skill trees or classes and various decisions that give players the illusion of being able to carve their own unique path in the story roleplaying as a specific type of character. Both genres borrow elements from each other, both benefit from it and there are games in which the lines between Western and Eastern RPG tropes are blurred but typically the focus of the games in each genre is entirely different.
