Matsukawa Issei has been a funeral home employee and mortician at Serenity in Sendai, Miyagi for four years. Being surrounded by death has never bothered him as it is not something he fears and views as the unavoidable endgame.

He lives a mundane, simple life that he believes suits him well enough. Though not always happy at times, he feels it is better than being miserable. He's watched many people grieve during his years working at the funeral home, and does not want to get close enough to someone to have to experience that himself.

But, all that changes when he begins visiting the Sendai City Museum. He intended to go there to clear his mind after work and people watch- but found himself watching one person in particular.
