Disheartened because of the recent dreadful events, introvert Sadie writes her last journal entry in her diary before leaving it in a garbage bin across town. The diary being the only friend Sadie ever has and has ever written to; she is surprised when she finds a letter addressed to herself in her mailbox. It turns out, a boy from across the city had read her diary entries-and is now writing to Sadie with hopes of casting joy into the young woman's heart.

For quite some time, the two exchanged their handwritten letters, both bringing sparks of happiness to the newly-found friendship. For a while, it distracted Sadie from being anguished; but when Sadie asks for her diary back and the young man agrees to end their letter-writings, she asks herself:
Can she really live in solitude?
